Bright accommodation Bright: what's actually on offer

Bright's a funny little town, sitting right where the flats give way to the Alpine foothills, and if you've driven up here before you'll know the last stretch in past the poplars is half the reason people come back every year. We're just outside town, a few minutes from the main street, and honestly that's the sweet spot.

People ask us what "Bright accommodation Bright" actually covers, since we get everyone from grey nomads to families with three kids and a dog crammed in the back seat. Fair question. We run cabins (one and two bedroom, most with their own kitchen and a deck), powered caravan and camping sites for anyone towing a van or dragging a camper trailer.

We're not going to pretend every room here is flash. The cabins are comfortable and clean, not luxury, and if you're after marble benchtops you'll want somewhere else. What we are good at is giving you a base for the Alpine Region without the Alpine Region prices you'd cop staying in Bright itself in peak season.

Ski season's obviously the big one. Mt Hotham's about an hour up the road, Falls Creek a bit over that, and a lot of our winter guests use us as the affordable option, staying here and driving up for the day rather than paying resort accommodation rates. Bring chains regardless of what the forecast says, the road can turn nasty fast above the snowline even when it's clear down here.

Summer's a different animal entirely and honestly our busier season these days. Mt Buffalo's close, the granite domes and the walking tracks up there are worth the trip even if you're not a big hiker, and the swimming holes along the Ovens River cool you down after. Bright itself does the rail trail, which runs out to Wandiligong and beyond, flat and shaded most of the way, good for kids on bikes who aren't up for anything technical.

On site we've got a pool that's free for guests, a playground the kids tend to disappear to for hours, and walking and riding tracks that loop around the property and connect out toward town. None of it costs extra. That matters when you're already juggling fuel, lift tickets or a week of groceries for a family of five.

A lot of our bookings come from repeat guests, which tells you something. Same family, same week most years, sometimes the same cabin if we can manage it. We had a couple from Shepparton book cabin 14 for the last four Januarys running. There's something to be said for a park where the manager remembers your name and your dog's name too.

One thing worth knowing before you book: the park can get booked out solid for Melbourne Cup weekend and right through the January school holidays, so if you're set on a specific cabin or a site near the river, get in early.
